Smile Education
 is recruiting on behalf of a specialist SEN secondary school in Acocks Green, Birmingham (B27) for a dedicated and enthusiastic Construction Tutor. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced construction professional who is passionate about helping young people with Special Educational Needs develop practical skills, confidence, and independence through vocational learning.

As the Construction Tutor, you will deliver engaging, hands-on construction sessions to small groups of students aged 11–19, adapting learning to meet individual needs and abilities. You will create a positive and supportive learning environment where students can develop practical trade skills while building self-esteem, resilience, teamwork, and employability skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver practical construction lessons covering areas such as carpentry, brickwork, painting and decorating, basic plumbing, and general maintenance.
  • Differentiate learning activities to ensure all students can access and succeed in vocational learning.
  • Create a safe, well-organised workshop environment, ensuring all health and safety procedures are followed.
  • Assess and monitor student progress, providing encouragement and constructive feedback.
  • Support students to develop vocational, personal, and life skills that prepare them for further education, training, or employment.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, teaching assistants, therapists, and pastoral staff to meet each student's individual needs.
  • Maintain workshop tools, equipment, and resources to a high standard.
We are looking for someone who:
  • Has significant practical experience within the construction industry.
  • Holds relevant vocational qualifications in construction or a recognised trade.
  • Has experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or training young people or adults (experience within an SEN setting is desirable but not essential).
  • Is patient, adaptable, and committed to supporting students with a range of additional needs.
  • Has excellent communication skills and the ability to motivate and inspire learners.
  • Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
