Why your students should learn a language.

Working with our partner schools and teachers, we meet heaps of people from all walks of life and with 98% of our school staff being multilingual, one of the main things we have learned is the importance of speaking a second language.

Speaking more than one language opens up a world of possibilities, from being able to communicate with a variety of different people from different cultures and countries to having an advantage when it comes to future career prospects, we believe every student should learn a language, here are a few more reasons why…

Boosts your brain

There are a number of studies that reinforce the fact that being multilingual improves cognitive development, no matter how old you are! For students, there’s evidence that being multilingual improves academic performance in other subjects due to more developed problem-solving skills and an increased ability to multitask. So not only does learning a foreign language give you a better memory and makes you more creative but it will also help your students pass their exams.

Improves cross-cultural understanding

Language and culture are deeply intertwined so by understanding a language and being able to communicate you can better grasp other cultures/ ways of life. A widened perspective will also encourage your students to be more empathetic in day-to-day life and less prejudiced toward those who are different, meaning they will be wonderful, well-rounded kids.

Benefits your future career

Being able to speak another language is a skill that gives you an advantage when competing against monolingual individuals for jobs. Employers look for all of the transferable skills learning a language will give you, such as communication, productivity and decision-making skills. We all know that one of the main priorities for schools is to prepare students for the future so teaching them a language is a great way to give your students a step up when it comes to their careers.

In our team, we have French, Urdu, Punjabi and Italian speakers, with a few of us who dabble in Spanish, Greek and German. With our push for diversity and inclusion and our strong belief in professional and personal development 90% of us want to learn a new language and we think you should too!
