How does the Smile Graduate Academy work?

A school can ‘grow their own teachers' by utilising our gifted graduates for the academic year as Teaching Assistants (Subject Specific), Teaching Assistants (General), Learning Support Mentors, Science Technicians, Sports Coaches, Dance & Drama Coaches and 1:1 Intervention Support.

Within these roles, your graduate trainee teacher will immerse themselves into school life whilst gaining a tremendous insight into the hard work, passion and commitment it takes to become a teacher.

For any forward-thinking school, this will provide a ‘year-long interview' and the perfect opportunity to access the suitability and future CPD requirements for a trainee teacher.

How does the Smile Graduate Academy Work? It gives you the opportunity to grow your own teachers.

The benefits of the Smile Graduate Academy to your school

What are the benefits for schools?

Graduate teaching assistants/learning support mentors are there to work alongside class teachers and add value by:

  • Working directly with lower-attaining pupils via 1:1 and small group structured interventions
  • Allow pupils to develop independent learning skills and bridge the gap and accelerate progress
  • Add value outside of the classroom through extra-curricular activities
  • Assist the class teacher with classroom and lesson preparation
  • Be utilised through the school as a cover if the need arises saving you money and inconvenience
  • Many graduates will continue from their support role onto a PGCE/School Direct/SCITT programme.

As well as this you will also enjoy the many benefits of working with Smile

What do we expect from you?

As a Smile Graduate Academy school, we ask that you do the following:

  • Work in partnership with Smile Education to create meaningful training plans for each graduate
  • Provide regular feedback to both Smile Education and your graduate to ensure they are the best that they can be
  • Provide an environment where they can both learn and add value to your school
  • Offer a minimum initial contract of 4 weeks to each graduate
